CONSUMER ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The Consumer Advisory Committee focuses on a model in which client choices are informed, their input is valued, multiple pathways to recovery are honored, and addiction is treated as a chronic primary disease. Consumer Advisory Committee members have been playing a critical role in fostering recovering persons, family members and other stakeholder involvement in the development and transformation to a client-centered and recovery oriented system of addiction care.

On May 19, 2007 a group of peers participated in a Client-Centered, Recovery-Oriented Forum to discuss how to address increasing involvement by clients and the recovery community in new ways of thinking and approaching addiction treatment and recovery support services. Dialogue from the ‘Forum’ is being used to continue the discussion through the establishment of an ongoing Consumer Advisory Committee to help assist New Jersey addiction providers with transitioning to a client-centered, recovery-oriented system of care.

Over the past year Consumer Advisory Committee members have reviewed the Forum’s progress report and have prepared to prioritize findings, develop recommendations, and create an agenda for implementation. Friends has been facilitating Consumer Advisory Committee members to organize in a way that fully empowers them to take ownership of the process and the recommendations resulting from the process through the election of leadership and establishment of advisory committee protocols.
