Confronting New Jersey’s Underage Drinking Problem: Policy Recommendations
This document is a continuation of NCADD—NJ’s April 2003 white paper on underage drinking. It proposes policy recommendations beyond an alcohol tax increase that the agency believes should be considered in New Jersey to further address this wide-spread public health problem.

Confronting New Jersey’s Underage Drinking Problem: Increase the State Alcohol Excise Tax
This paper outlines a proposal to have New Jersey increase its excise tax on alcohol to create a price barrier to underage drinking and to use a portion of the additional revenue for a comprehensive underage drinking program. The paper documents how many adolescents drink and how much they consume, one the most alarming facts being that they account for 20 percent of all alcohol purchased in the United States.

The 2001 New Jersey Middle School Survey

The 2001 New Jersey Middle School Survey was conducted by the Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Addiction Services between December 2000 and March 2001. A total of 16,002 valid surveys were collected from 7th and 8th grade public and private school students throughout the state. This is the third survey of New Jersey middle school students; the previous surveys were conducted in 1995 and 1999.

Trends in Injection Drug Use Among Persons Entering Addiction Treatment --- New Jersey, 1992-1999
This report summarizes an analysis of trends in injection drug use among persons admitted to New Jersey addiction treatment programs during 1992--1999; the findings suggest substantial increases in injection use among young adult heroin users throughout the state and an increase in heroin use among young adults who reside in suburban and rural New Jersey.

Need for Alcohol and Drug Treatment in New Jersey, 1993
This report provides needs estimates for alcohol and drug treatment. These estimates provide a basis for predicting future need for treatment in the state and its counties as well as being useful for objective short-term treatment planning and resource allocation.

The 1998 New Jersey Survey of Recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
This survey assesses the prevalence of substance use and the need and demand for addictions treatment among New Jersey recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

Evaluation of the NJ Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program: Baseline Measures
This report contains a series of baseline surveys and ongoing data collection systems on current tobacco attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors among New Jersey youth and adults. This data will serve as the basis for an evaluation of the New Jersey Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program to monitor the extent to which the program components are achieving expected outcomes.

Treatment Utilization in New Jersey: The Case of Detoxification
In this study, New Jersey’s Department of Health and Senior Services corrects gaps in existing reporting mechanisms to obtain a more complete accounting of alcohol and drug detoxification services in the state.

New Jersey Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment - 1998 Annual Statistical Perspective
This report is a statistical summary of alcohol and drug abuse admission records submitted by treatment providers in 1998. The statistical summaries document services provided and present a statistical portrait of the New Jersey treatment population.

The 1999 High School Student Drug and Alcohol Use Survey
This report describes the conduct and findings of an alcohol and drug use survey of high school students in the State of New Jersey.

The 1999 New Jersey Middle School Survey
This report describes the conduct and findings of a drug use survey of 7th and 8th grade students in the State of New Jersey.
