2009 Advocacy Leadership Program Launch
NCADD-New Jersey is now accepting applications for its 2009 Advocacy Leadership Program. In its second year, the Advocacy Leadership Program is designed to foster, support and promote a generation of leaders in New Jersey committed to confronting the state’s most pressing addiction treatment, prevention and recovery issues.
Recovery Community is a Constituency of Consequence
As New Jersey’s 2008 General Election draws near, voters and candidates might want to
contemplate how addicted individuals have been stigmatized and consider pursuing sound
public policies that recognize addiction for what it is: a preventable and treatable disease.
Educated voters like you are one of the most important means of pursuing such policies.
With that in mind NCADD-NJ has produced its 2008 New Jersey General Election Guide to highlight some important issues pertaining to prevention, treatment of and recovery from alcoholism and drug dependence.
As a voter it will be helpful to be aware of these issues so that your voice can be heard in the local, state and
national arenas. Review the 2008 election guide, candidate survey and candidate responses and remember--recovery is working for millions of Americans and the recovery community is a constituency of consequence.
NJN Covers Recovery Voices Count Campaign Launch
New Jersey is one of a hand full of states selected for the National Recovery Voices Count Initiative. The project was officially launched at the NJ State House on September 25, 2008 with NCADD-NJ's Advocacy Leaders supporting the initiative to register voters who are in recovery from addiction or who have a family member in recovery. The effort also seeks to educate the public as well as lawmakers about addiction issues. This is a very exciting time for the recovery community as it becomes clear to the public and candidates that the country’s next leader must be prepared to address this public health crisis. The goal here in New Jersey is to register 1,000 new voters.

30 Advocate Leaders Attend Weekend Retreat
On the last weekend in June, the inaugural class of the NCADD-NJ Advocacy Leadership Program commenced and 30 Leaders participated in an intensive weekend retreat. Leader advocates were energized by the program, from the Legislative Proclamations they received from Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson-Coleman to the presentations by leading addiction and recovery professionals and advocates, as well as the inspirational speech given by Eric Arauz, to the final certificate presentations. Advocate leader Stephanie Anne Fromin said of the weekend, "It was obvious that a lot of time, effort, thought, and passion went into the program. NCADD-NJ really inspired me and gave me hope that the movement for the recovering community to be legislatively empowered will grow into something big. It was a terrific learning experience."
