Reducing
Stigma
Few among you consider alcoholism a proper subject for open discussion,
few among you would willingly label yourself, or a friend or colleague,
an alcoholic, and even fewer would be able to recognize alcoholism
early, when there is the best chance for recovery. more reducing stigma>

CELEBRATE RECOVERY NATIONWIDE,
LIBERTY STATE PARK RALLY FOR RECOVERY HUB EVENT
Liberty State Park hosted its New Jersey’s
sixth Addiction Recovery event but it provided many firsts that made
it, in keeping with the tone of the day, not a rehashing but a true
renewal.
Signs-of-Sobriety were one of the many groups
who participated in the 2007 Rally for Recovery
Foremost of the elements unique to
this Rally was that its New Jersey sponsors joined with national and
New York groups to establish the event as the national hub of Recovery
Month, evidenced by the presence of the new director of the Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Terry Cline.
The Rally was further charged by the fact
that a federal parity bill, the Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction
Equity Act, progressed through the House of Representatives and was
approaching a vote by the full body. This lent an urgency to add advocacy
to the celebration. To bring this home to the over 1500 attendees,
a Take Action tent was set up and one of the event’s featured
speakers was David Wellstone, son of the late Sen. Paul Wellstone,
who championed parity before his untimely death.
Before the dignitaries addressed the
crowd, five recovering individuals spoke, most laying their souls bare.
They didn’t hesitate to do
so because they knew the audience could be trusted to respond with respect.
When it came time for the officials to address
the crowd, they made it clear they knew what the day was for. Commissioner
Jennifer Velez of the Department of Human Services shared that two
members of her family had not found their way into recovery.
Integrity House wins Banner Contest for Treatment providers
category.
Division
of Addiction Services Director Raquel Mazon Jeffers noted that Recovery
Month takes place in September, linking recovery to the fall’s
seminal events: the harvest, the Jewish new year, and returning to
school. And keynote Tommy Ford drew laughs in delivering a serious
message that each person needs to be sure to exhaust all of his or
her ability and giving before their life draws to a close.
All in all, the Rally had something for everyone--inspiring,
amusing, touching and powerful.

IN
ADDICTION RECOVERY?
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
To overcome stigma and discrimination, people in recovery or who are
receiving treatment need to understand the rights, responsibilities
and remedies the law affords them. Knowing one’s rights can mean
gaining fair access to a job, housing, or health services. This brochure
is intended to give an overview of the rights responsibilities and
remedies available to a recovering person or someone who cares about
a recovering person.
NCADD-NJ LAUNCHES ATTORNEY TOOLKIT:
REPRESENTING THE CLIENT WITH A SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER
There is a lack of understanding
by the public and by many lawyers and judges about addiction, treatment,
and recovery. Lawyers are in a unique position to help clients overcome
their addiction. The best resolution to an attorney's case may hinge
on identifying addiction as the underlying problem, assisting the client
in obtaining treatment, and educating judges about addiction, treatment,
and recovery. This primer is intended to provide the necessary background
and facts that can be used in all legal contexts.
CLIENT CENTERED/
RECOVERY-ORIENTED
CONSUMER ADVISORY COMMITTEE
In May Friends of Addiction Recovery-New Jersey held a dialogue about
a Client-Centered/Recovery-Oriented System of Care. The forum was organized
to foster recovering persons, family members and other stakeholder
involvement
in the development and transformation to a client-centered
and recovery oriented system of care. The session
drew 27 participants, more than half of whom volunteered for an
advisory committee charged with fleshing out the ideas posited
during the afternoon. The Consumer Advisory Committee,
which consists of 17 participants, is scheduled to review the progress
report and the focus group findings in order to prioritize them,
develop recommendations and create an agenda for implementation.
