GET READY- THE 2006 RECOVERY WALK IS COMING.
Friends of Addiction Recovery-New Jersey (FOAR-NJ) celebrates Recovery Month by hosting an annual Recovery Walk scheduled for September 16, 2006, at Liberty State Park. The Walk is one of 166 events taking place across the nation to celebrate National Addiction Recovery Month and is the premier recovery celebration in the metropolitan area. Community members statewide are being asked to work together to build support for recovery from drugs and alcohol. The day will include singing, celebration, recovery stories and speeches by state officials, winding up with a procession along the waterfront’s Liberty Walk in view of the Statue of Liberty.

The guest speaker will be Oscar, Grammy and Globe winning songwriter, Paul Williams.
Sober 15 years, his humorous observations of his own life experiences are enhanced by the education and knowledge he gained through his studies and certification from UCLA as a Certified Drug Rehabilitation Counselor. Williams is donating his time to participate in the Walk.

2006 NJ SHOUTS DOWN DRUGS CONCERT TO BE RELEASED TO COMCAST ON DEMAND
The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey (PDFNJ) and Comcast are pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual Prevention Concert, the culmination of the 2006 New Jersey Shouts Down Drugs competition, can now be viewed on Comcast On Demand by all New Jersey Comcast Digital Cable customers. “Comcast is proud of our relationship with the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey,” said Joe Fischer, Comcast senior regional vice president for New Jersey. “The New Jersey Shouts Down Drugs event is an innovative and exciting way to spread the important anti-drug message to our communities and to our youth.”

According to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America Partnership’s Attitude Tracking Study (PATS) Survey, young people said they were as likely to learn about drugs and alcohol from their peers as they were from their parents, television and the internet. High School students interested in participating in the 2007 NJ Shouts Down Drugs competition, which will again be sponsored by Comcast, should visit the website for rules and entry information.

SILENT TREATMENT PROVIDES REAL-LIFE STORIES TO EXPAND MEDIA OUTREACH
Silent Treatment: Addiction in America is a national, multi-media public education initiative that places a media spotlight on addiction prevention, treatment and recovery issues to promote consumer awareness and spark change across the country.

For National Recovery Month they have developed a five-part newspaper series distributed by Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service free to newspapers across the United States. The series includes personal stories of daily struggles and victories on the road to recovery and are available for reprint in local papers.

Silent Treatment provides an opportunity for advocacy and research groups focused on addiction issues to expand current outreach efforts. Groups can partner with print and broadcast media to encourage local newspapers to run the series, develop local stories and organize progressive ways to mobilize their communities. This multi-media, public education project is produced by Public Access Journalism LLC and supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

CASA survey: parents
unattuned to teens' use

Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, speaks in Philadelphia about the factors that have made illicit use of pharmaceutical drugs more common. One-third of teens and nearly half of 17-year olds attend house parties where parents are present and teens are drinking, smoking marijuana or using cocaine, Ecstasy or prescription drugs, according to the National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse XI: Teens and Parents, an annual back-to-school survey conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. CASA’s survey also reveals that teens who say parents are not present at the parties they attend are 16 times likelier to say alcohol is available, 15 times likelier to say illegal and prescription drugs are available and 29 times likelier to say marijuana is available, compared to teens who say parents are always present at the parties they attend. NJHI 2007 Call for Proposals Now Available
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s (RWJF) New Jersey Health Initiatives (NJHI) program is designed to improve health and health care in New Jersey communities. NJHI primarily funds implementation projects. Research projects are not eligible for funding through NJHI. To be eligible for funding under NJHI 2007, projects must address one of three specific RWJF interest areas:

• Addiction prevention and treatment

• Halting the rise of childhood obesity

• Services to vulnerable populations that address health and health care problems that intersect with social factors – poverty, race, education and housing.

Approximately $2.4 million will be awarded for up to eight selected grants in New Jersey. Grants can range from $50,000 to $300,000 for a duration of two to three years. The application process for this program is completely online, and the deadline for submission of proposals under the first phase of the program is Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at 3 p.m.

Optional instructional conference calls will be held on Tuesday, September 19 and Thursday, September 21, 2006.

FILM: A Scanner Darkly is about America’s endless and futile war on drugs. Written for the screen and directed by Richard Linklater.

Based on legendary science-fiction author Philip K. Dick’s own experiences, “A Scanner Darkly” tells the darkly comedic, caustic, but deeply tragic tale of drug use in the modern world. The film plays like a graphic novel come to life with live-action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process to create a haunting version of America, seven years from now. “A Scanner Darkly” stars Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder and Rory Cochrane.
